CHAPTER 17  •  Irish Ice

Why did you name Chapter 17 Irish Ice?

Chapter 17 Irish Ice has embossed decors using designs of Celtic origin. If you have traveled the British Isles, you would find these designs in old churches, government buildings, and castles from the middle ages and even earlier. The word "ice" is used because of the beautiful unique crackle glazes that give the tile the appearance of having small ice crystals on the surface.

What are the key features of Chapter 17 Irish Ice?

  • The six crackle glaze colors create a beautiful effect on the mouldings and field tile, providing a "depth of color" not normally produced in glazed tiles. The special and quite expensive translucent glazes used in Chapter l7 are different from our other crackle-glazed handmade tiles.
  • In addition to the 6"x6" and 3"x6" field tiles, Irish Ice also has matching 2"x2" mosaics. All 2"x2" mosaics are mesh mounted and are the same thickness as the 6"x6" and 3"x6" field tiles. The sheet size for the ceramic mosaics is 1.09 square feet per sheet.
  • The five frosted glass medleys are quite different than our glass items in Chapter 7, Chapter 12, Chapter 14 and Chapter 16. The ½ inch glass pieces are mesh mounted using 3 distinct colors randomly mounted on each sheet. The glass colors were specially selected to complement our Irish Ice color palette. The sheet size is .96 square feet per sheet.
  • The embossed decors of Celtic origin help create a truly unique installation. The embossed decors can be used as "spot" deco's to draw interest to the accented wall or as a two tile high "band" as shown in the catalog. The decors were designed to not be deep relief, allowing for easier cleaning. These embossed decors will look fantastic under cabinet locations where lighting accentuates them and behind a stove framed with mouldings. See our Chapter 17 catalog for installation ideas.

Where can this collection be used?

Chapter 17 Irish Ice is for wall use and for installations on kitchen, bath, or powder room walls and exterior walls not subjected to freeze - thaw cycles. The decorative colors allow you to create many different accent areas throughout the home or in theme restaurants and commercial installations. The field tiles are NOT recommended for floors. SEE OUR CHAPTER 17 CATALOG FOR IDEAS.

Please note that we do NOT recommend crackle finish tiles be used on horizontal food serving or preparation applications, such as kitchen counters. However, they can be used on powder room counters.

Chapter 17 Irish Ice frosted glass can be used on swimming pools, spas, bathroom floors and walls, kitchen backsplashes, exterior facades, and steam rooms. Frosted glass makes an exciting statement to your custom installation.

Remember the use of expansion joints when using glass in large areas or in outside installations.

Are there any special design or installation tips for Chapter 17 Irish Ice?

Irish Ice has surface bullnose, bead, and cornice trim to allow for versatile installations.

We produce Chapter 17 Irish Ice to reflect the shade variations associated with handmade tile. As with all Jeffrey Court handmade tiles, we strongly recommend laying out and blending the tiles prior to installation. This step will ensure a proper color blend in order to achieve a classic look for your installation.

We recommend sealing crackle glazed tiles prior to and after installation with a high quality penetrating sealer.

The crackle glaze nuance brings an old world charm to each installation. In wet areas, water can penetrate through these minute cracks which will accentuate the antiquing. This nuance is something to be embraced as ALL CRACKLE glazes have this antiquing.

Never use mastic to install vitreous products, especially glass. Glass needs to be installed using a high quality polymer WHITE thin set with sanded grouts. If used in pools-spas, the same type of materials should be considered.
