The word "suite" has many meanings ranging from living spaces to musical arrangements. What struck us as the perfect name for Chapter 1 was the meaning "a series of things designed to be used together". Chapter 1 Suite Glass is a collection of glass field tiles, liners, and mosaics that can be used on their own or in combination to create stunning installations.
There are many. Here are just a few:
Interior and exterior wall surfaces to include kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, tub and shower enclosures, hearth surrounds, pools, spas, fountains, and barbeque facades are some areas where this product would make a dramatic statement.
Suite Glass can used with other products we manufacture or import so using Chapter 1 with stone and ceramic surfaces makes for many up-market design possibilities.
The Suite Glass mosaics can be used in bathrooms and shower pans except in beach areas where tracking sand in to these areas is a common occurrence. Sand will over time scratch the glass surface. Although the coefficient of friction for glass is not nearly as high as many flooring materials, with the use of sanded grout and being a mosaic makes Suite Glass usable on bathroom and other light duty floors. The 3x6 subway field tiles ARE NOT recommended for floors due to slip / fall considerations and potential scratching.
Jeffrey Court has created a beautiful 12 page catalog to showcase the field tiles and mosaics in Chapter 1. For our showroom and designer clients, we also have produced a full set of 6"x12" grouted panels that are very effective at showcasing the products in a minimal amount of space.
Glass is vitreous meaning there is virtually no absorption with this product. With this characteristic in mind, we recommend the following installation system.
Setting Material:
White polymer modified thin set mortars meeting ANSI 118.4 or 118.11 are recommended for Chapter 1 Suite Glass mosaics. Organic Adhesives (Mastics) are not recommended due to low bond strengths. Epoxy adhesives are not recommended due to low flexibility. Always check with setting material manufacturer to ensure suitability of mortars in setting glass tiles.
Trowel:
A 3/16" V- notched trowel is recommended. Once thin set mortar has been applied and combed with notches, smooth out setting bed with flat side of trowel to an even surface approximately 1/8" thick.
Grout:
Sanded polymer modified sanded grouts are recommended for Chapter 1 Suite Glass mosaics. Due to the thermal rate of expansion found with some glass tile, the installation must be flexible enough to allow for movement especially if the glass is used in exterior applications, in pools, spas, and steam showers. Epoxy grouts are NOT recommended due to high strength and low flexibility and possible yellowing due to UV light exposure.
Movement Joints:
Movement joint requirements depend upon factors such as substrate, tile type, climate, and size of job. Jeffrey Court directs installers to follow the recommendations detailed in EJ 171-07 "Movement Joints" found in the TCA Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation.
Cutting Tiles:
Use a high quality wet tile saw outfitted with a high quality diamond blade designed for cutting glass tiles Always cut tiles with the face up. Sanding of cut edges is recommended to "ease" sharp edge.
